One the dumbest cases I’ve seen in a while is finally be resolved. The Georgia Supreme Court has decided that getting consensual sex between high school students is not worth 10 years in prison after all. The AJC story, the Google News link

Water snitches become first line of enforcement

In Douglas County this week 15 people have been caught in the middle of the night breaking a watering ban and had their water turned off on the spot and only turned back on after they paid a $25 fine.

The water crisis in metro Atlanta — shrinking supplies, growing paranoia — has suddenly come to street justice. And it likely will get uglier before it gets better. Or wetter.

Interesting story from the AJC

Metro Atlanta’s primary water sources — Lake Lanier and Allatoona Lake — are dropping fast and could hit historic lows.

Allatoona is nearly 13 feet below full heading into fall, normally the driest season of the year.

Metroblogging Atlanta has a very interesting post about the ATL’s Jena response. On a personal note, my wife was there on “Black Thursday” and took some pictures with her phone cam. Hopefully, I can post them here soon.

Update: I have a heck of a time getting the images off her phone. It’s an LG with no bluetooth, so I’m guessing each image had to be mailed from the phone. Anyway, I’ll get to that as soon as I can and maybe have her blog about her experience.

“The number of foreclosure filings reported in the U.S. last month more than doubled versus August 2006 and jumped 36 percent from July, with Georgia among states with the highest foreclosure rates.The trend that signals many homeowners are increasingly unable to make timely payments on their mortgages or sell their homes amid a national housing slumpA total of 243,947 foreclosure filings were reported in August, up 115 percent from 113,300 in the same month a year ago, Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac Inc. said Tuesday. There were 179,599 foreclosure filings reported in July.

Chinese firms come to God’s Country

Officials with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Development Authority — groups that recruited the Chinese and announced the banquet — wouldn’t say.

Turns out, though, that Hunan Province-based Sany Heavy Industry Co. is expected to build a plant in Fayette County that could one day employ 600 people, according to several people familiar with the project. The investment could top $50 million.

“I’m just so excited to finally see it happen,” said Lani Wong, who chairs the Atlanta chapter of the National Association of Chinese-Americans, a nonprofit business and cultural promotion group. Wong didn’t provide details.

Sany, one of the largest machinery makers in the People’s Republic of China, furthers the Communist nation’s investment in Georgia. Two other Chinese manufacturers — an electrical components factory in Barnesville and a soy sauce maker in Newnan — have announced factories in the Atlanta area since June 2006.

Atlanta Councilman Wants to Ban Saggy Pants, Exposed Bra Straps

Because there are not enough crimes to enforce in the Metro area. Now a councilman wants to make baggy and sagging pants illegal. Friends of mine say we should organize/join a potest against this because they thing it’s a racial thing. That may very well be but in my opnion, there are are lot more important racial justice issues happening in the ATL. With all the Vick dog fighting media coverage I’ve gotten worried that the Genarlow Wilson case is losing the attention it deserves. Besides, banning bra straps and thongs? That part will never fly. That cuts waaay too close to Atlanta’s voluminous silicon implant culture. The debate rages on.
